Right to Food

There is a long journey from a policy to a bill to an Act. A policy is a statement of the Government where it acknowledges the presence of the problem, a need for a solution and an implementation design. Based on this a bill gets introduced for the legislature to take decision. The National Food Security Act was always present in the form of Public Distribution System popularly known as Ration for the poor. There were several aspects of this which needed to be reconsidered and debated. Pragati Abhiyan contributed to this debate through studies, through series of articles, op-eds in mainstream English and Marathi newspapers, making presentations to the legislatures and actively participating in the civil society action. AT the same time there is a novel way of implementing the same Ration system initiated by an Additional collector in Nashik district. This is called ‘Gharpoch’ or Home delivery of Ration. In this a three months quota of ration of each family is given to the family in advance, which ensures full quota and timely quota of their entitlements under the scheme. Popularizing this scheme, making it work effectively for the poor is one of the activities of Pragati ABhiyan in villages of Igatpuri, Traimbakeshwar and Peth.
